Why Math is Amazing

What are Math Maps?

Math maps are a project created by Traveling Miss T. The Math Maps combine math, art, and “traveling” for students worldwide. Ecologik partnered with Traveling Miss T to bring Cabrillo science and history to students world wide through the FREE curriculum on Miss T’s website.

How Math Maps Helped Me:

  • Math maps have allowed me to learn a coding program called R.

  • Math maps have allowed me to speak confidently.

My Personal View:

The Math Maps Project, in my opinion, was one of my favorite projects I support in Ecologik. The main objective was to inform a younger audience of how conservation environmental scientists work and also the significance of the diverse sites of Cabrillo National Monument. This project wasn’t possible without my amazing fellow apprentices from the respective Sci Comm Team and Research team.

What the Math Maps Taught Me

Throughout the Math Maps Project, being on the SciComm Team made me more comfortable with public speaking. For this project, I had to plan and memorize scripts to make interactive videos for younger audiences. Although I struggled with memorization, I’ve developed confidence in speaking enthusiastically as a result of this project. Additionally, researching the scripts was fun! The process of making these Math Map videos has helped me understand the importance of communication, teamwork, and confidence in speaking

Research

Throughout the entire Math Maps Project, being on the Research Team has broadened my horizons and allowed me to learn how to use an important coding program called “R.” Many scientists, such as biologists, use this program to investigate and analyze data about predictions and patterns within the environment. Additionally, it allowed my group and I to communicate activities that environmental scientists do with our younger audience. The Math Maps project has provided an outlet for  me and others to enjoy math, realize its potential, and better understand why conservation environmental science is so important to National Parks.

Conclusion

Being a part of the Math Maps project has been a valuable learning experience. I learned how to navigate myself through the coding Program R and develop my writing and speaking skills. Learning how to use R was really important, as many STEM jobs use this program to organize their data. This project also allowed me to speak about the different places at Cabrillo, its historical value, and why it is important to protect the environment. This experience has given me the opportunity to appreciate this park, math, and lastly the importance of proper communication.
